Courses in 2012

The Havens offer specialised and accredited education and training focusing on victim care. The courses have been developed with the Metropolitan Police’s Project Sapphire. They are delivered by recognised experts in forensic examination, trauma and aftercare, sexual health, policing and criminal law.

All courses are held in central London and include a course certificate with CPD, breakfast, lunch, tea and coffee.

Adult Sexual Assault Examination and Aftercare

Two-day course for clinicians interested in updating their forensic skills or who are interested in the care and management of recent victims of sexual assault.

The course costs £375.

The course covers:

- an introduction to different models of care
- communication with clients and other agencies
- the role of specialist police officers
- confidentiality and consent
- the latest forensic techniques, swabbing and preserving evidence; describing injuries accurately.
- the law relating to sexual assault and the role of prosecution and defence
- STI prevention and good practice in aftercare; specialistresponses to trauma.

Course dates:

  • Saturday 4th and Sunday 5th February
  • Monday 14th and Tuesday 15th May
  • Saturday 8th and Sunday 9th September
  • Saturday 10th and Sunday 11th November

Paediatric Acute Sexual Assault Examination and Aftercare

Two-day course for paediatric clinicians interested in the care of child victims of sexual assault.

The course costs £375.

The course covers:

- an introduction to sexual assault referral centres
- gaining confidence in working with children
- the role of specialist police officers and other agencies
- confidentiality and consent in relation to children
- the latest forensic techniques and describing injuries accurately
- the chain of evidence in relation to sexually transmitted infection samples
- the prevalence and identification of acute cases of child abuse
- the law relating to child protection and sexual assault
- STI prevention and good practice in aftercare
- demonstration of colposcopy.

Course dates:

  • Tuesday 27th and Wednesday 28th March
  • Monday 28th and Tuesday 29th May
  • Monday 8th and Tuesday 9th October
  • Tuesday 20th and Wednesday 21st November

Courtroom Skills / Witness Familiarisation

One-day course, led by professional barristers and former police officers, aimed at clinicians who may have to present evidence in courts or tribunals – either as an expert or a professional witness.

The course costs £295.

The course covers:

- an introduction to the courtroom and the different roles
- your role as a witness
- examination-in-chief and cross examination
- how to present evidence confidently, effectively and ethically
- tailored case studies and focused role play
- one to one feedback on your strengths and weaknesses.

Course dates:

  • Friday 27th April
  • Friday 12th October
