How the Havens came about

Need for the Havens

The first Haven, in Camberwell, was set up because of the lack of appropriately trained female doctors to provide forensic examinations locally.

In order to collect DNA and other evidence, an examination should be carried out as soon as possible after sexual assault, and ideally the victim should not wash until afterwards. Unacceptable delays of many hours were usual.

In addition victims found it difficult to have other needs met, such as emergency contraception, prevention of infections including HIV, and psychosocial support.

The first Haven

The Haven - Camberwell opened in May 2000 as part of the Department of Sexual Health at King's College Hospital, to cover 12 boroughs in South London. Its aim is to provide both excellent holistic care and gold standard evidence collection to assist in convicting those guilty.

Haven expansion

The Haven - Camberwell was evaluated favourably by Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Constabulary and by the Metropolitan Police Authority. Matched police and health funding was agreed to open 2 further Havens for North London.
